Writer’s Block
The dreaded block is well and truly set in. It’s not that I don’t know what to write – I really do! I spend a lot of time formulating scenes and inter-threading story lines. I just don’t seem to be able to find the motivation to sit down and hammer them out on the laptop.
I’ve come to realise that it may be my surroundings. I tend to write at home. When I wrote ‘The Fall of The Veil’ my daughters were tots. They were in bed before 7PM and this gave me a couple of hours in the evening to settle down and get some writing done. They’re bigger now and seem to take over every room in the house. Whether they’re bugging me to go on the Xbox, squabbling amongst themselves or asking for my assistance with everything, I never seem to get any time to myself. Until they go to bed, which is any time between 8:30PM and 9:00PM. By that time I’m too tired to think straight.
Speaking of Xbox… I’m too often tempted to play on Skyrim or Batman: Arkham Assault (games I missed out on first time around) instead of writing. TV box sets also take up my time (currently just started Season 5 of Vikings).
My solution is one that countless writers have done before me – make my very own dedicated writing space. In my case it’s going to be the garden shed. It’s a sturdy thing and well insulated and, most importantly, outside of the home. I think that by making this my own little getaway with no distractions I will be able to get back into my story and improve my writing.
I will get rid of most of the spiders (some will stay as a deterrent for my girls…)
